Todd Bentley or Jesus Christ?

To the Reader: Below is a word-for-word transcript of Todd Bentley’s YouTube video-taped message titled, “Jesus Christ Himself wants to visit you.” As of this writing, the 5 minute-23 second video may be reviewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdwBrB8cCOk .
Patricia King, self-proclaimed prophetess and founder of Extreme Prophetic, provides a short introduction to the video, and backs Todd Bentley’s claims to have seen Jesus Christ. Patricia King, herself, is no stranger to conflict and controversy ( http://www.extremeprophetic.com/conflict_home.htm ).
The following word-for-word transcript begins at 2:41 into the video, where Todd Bentley states:
Just recently, I was in Redding, California, and I had a face-to-face encounter with Jesus. It was real. And I was sitting in this green room in a chair. I was in a chair just like this, and I could feel the presence of the Lord all-around me.
You know, we worship and we pray. We can feel the presence of the Lord; we can feel the peace of God. And as I was sitting in the chair, I, I literally saw heaven open. My eyes were open and I saw heaven open, and I saw the Lord step out of heaven–literally step out of heaven. And from the Lord, Himself, He appeared to me, and, and it was as if He came to me into this realm. He appeared to me.
I, I remember His face. He had the brownest eyes that I’d ever seen; kinda reminded me of the movie, Bambi. Had these big brown eyes. He had long, brownish-black, curly locks that went down past His shoulders. And I remember His beard. I remember he was wearing and Ephod [see Reference.com], and I was surprised. It wasn’t like the glory, it was just a, a plain Ephod. And it was just humble. And He came in the form of, as I would imaging Jesus with the disciples on the Earth, as the Son of man; wasn’t the King of glory; wasn’t in His resurrection glory. It was, He came to me in the form of a humble servant–the Son of man. I mean, he had sandals on His feet; a real plain Ephod. But it was His eyes. And I saw the Lord. It was His eyes.
And from the Lord I saw literally ten rainbows come from the Lord. It was almost like a, a, a TV; like a projection television from the Lord came heaven. And I saw hills and I saw lions and I saw rivers of oil and I saw all kinds of butterflies and giant bumblebees. But, but it was the rainbows. And the brightest color that came from the Lord was pink, which is love and emotions. But ten rainbows. It was blinding. And I could see all of heaven and its glory. It was like Psalms 23. It was the paradise of God. But the Lord appeared to me in this realm.
And I remember His eyes, and I looked into His eyes and I thought, Aren’t your eyes supposed to be like fire? He said, “These are my eyes as I was as a man on the Earth. If you were to see me in heaven, I have eyes like fire.” And I, I looked into Him face-to-face, and He looked me in the eyes. He actually put a hand on my shoulders and He said these words: “Peace I give you, not as the world gives.” And I felt this impartation of the literal supernatural peace of God come over me.
Jesus is wonderful. Jesus is beautiful. There’s no one like Him. He is the King of glory. He is the Lord, strong and mighty. And we love Him and we worship Him, and we thank Him for His goodness.
But may you have a visitation of the Lord. This is your year for Jesus to visit you, if He’s never visited you before.
[End of video]
Is Todd Bentley telling the truth? Was Todd Bentley’s “face-to-face encounter” with the real Jesus of the Bible or with a counterfeit? Here is what Jesus Christ and the Bible have to say:
Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe him (Matthew 24:23).
So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them (Matthew 24:26).
So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19).
Now having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.” And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. “They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. “For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day (Luke 17:20-24).
Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also (John 14:1-3).
And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven (Acts 1:9-11).
But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully (2 Corinthians 11:3-4).
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).
Boasting is necessary, though it is not profitable; but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago–whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows–such a man was caught up to the third heaven. And I know how such a man–whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows–was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak (2 Corinthians 12:1-4).
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1 John 4:1).
Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen (Revelation 1:7).
So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you (Revelation 3:3).
Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame (Revelation 16:15).
Todd Bentley claims to have seen Jesus Christ, but it was not the Jesus of the Bible.

Kim,
But, I had forgotten the “Do not go beyond what is written” and this would have been useful earlier in this discussion. I had already had it highlighted in my Bible.

If only one billion were saved, that would be quite narrow in comparison.
John, if a billion additional souls are saved at the end that would be quite a significant number! Bickle et al are not just talking about a billion souls in total which would be insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But, again, in light of Jesus’ own words this false doctrine is in conflict with the Bible.
I know you are not going to like this; but, I’m going to state this anyway. If you take a lot of this doctrine and turn it upside down, then it makes sense. If you accept a billion souls at the end turned toward the deception of the New Age movement’s one world religion, then it makes perfect sense in light of scripture.
And, the (radical) Joel’s Army/MSoG is going to persecute the true [small] church remnant of true believers who refuse to go along with the push for unity at all costs — at the expense of true Biblical doctrine. This again lines up with Matthew 24:9-13 among other scripture.

Dear “r180”:
“r180” wrote: “I’ve just heard so often from people who like to go back five or ten years and pull out quotes from people like Benny Hinn and many others.”
Read these word-for-word “quotes” from an audio-tape by Benny Hinn and tell me if he is a true or false prophet:
http://www.christianresearchservice.com/BHinn1.htm
Benny Hinn has never repented of those false prophecies, and has added many more to his list, including appearances of and visitations with “Jesus.”
“r180” wrote: “Have these people been given opportunity to respond?”
Yes. I and others tried to contact Benny Hinn numerous times for meetings. Although Hinn promised to meet with me, the only reply I received was from his attorney, who warned me to back-off. Check this out and see if the attorney’s warning paid off:
http://www.christianresearchservice.com/Benny_Hinn.htm
For the record, depending on the situation, it is standard operational procedure for me to attempt contact with individuals to express concerns and ask questions. Here is a list of letters and no replies:
http://www.christianresearchservice.com/Letters_NoReplies.htm
Speaking of trying to contact people, in preparation for an upcoming article, I have tried to contact Todd Bentley by phone, e-mail, and FAX. I have spoken to and provided e-mails Todd Bentley’s Fresh Fire Ministries staff, who said they would forward my questions to Bentley. While it would take less than 10 seconds to answer the questions I presented to Bentley, as of this writing there has been no reply.
Whether Todd Bentley does it out of ignorance or deception, the “Jesus” Bentley promotes is not the Jesus of the Bible. Bentley’s claims of seeing “Jesus” and trips back-and-forth to heaven is a gross misrepresentation of Scripture and calls Jesus a liar. Jesus clearly said:
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe him” (Matthew 24:23).
“So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them” (Matthew 24:26).
Jesus’ own words cover and warn against:
— dreams and daydreams
— imaginations and thoughts
— “visions” and “visitations”
— extra-Biblical eyewitness accounts
— images/statues of “Jesus” in and on churches, office windows, buildings, movies, cloud formations, Shroud of Turin, and grilled-cheese sandwiches
— gossip, rumors, and speculation on all of the above
But despite Jesus’ warnings, Todd Bentley wants everyone to believe he has seen and been visited by “Jesus.” This, in and of itself, should be enough to cause you and others to separate immediately from Todd Bentley and the spiritually corrupt system he operates in.
Mike Oppenheimer of Let Us Reason ministries has written a very informative five-part series on Todd Bentley. The first article in the series begins at
http://www.letusreason.org/Latrain37.htm .
The center of the Christian faith is Jesus Christ. The late Walter Martin, who spent a great deal of his life reaching out to those caught up in the cults and the occult, said that, “You can be right in every area of your theology, but be wrong on who Jesus Christ is, and be wrong enough to lose your soul for all eternity.”
“Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting” (Romans 16:17-18).
“If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain” (1 Timothy 6:3-5).
“He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it” (Titus 1:9).
“Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds” (2 John 1:9-10).
Therefore, take your pick: Todd Bentley’s “Jesus” or the Jesus Christ of the Bible.

Apparantly, Todd Bentley’s angel is not William Branham’s angel. They do not share the same doctrines, and the characteristics of the angels are not the same. One example…
Todd Bentley says his angel comes on his LEFT hand side. William Branham said his angel came on his RIGHT hand side:
“You ever notice one my healing services, I bring the people from my right, because the Angel of the Lord always comes on my right side. I want Him to meet the people, so they’ll have the anointing when they come up here that He can tell them and bless them. Right side of the altar stood the Angel of the Lord. And He said, ‘Zacharias, God has answered your prayers.'”
I also see that some people say that William Branham prophecied falsely, of things that did not come to pass. This is not true. I challenge anyone to show where he ever gave a false prophecy.

Lee
Here are two Branham false prophecies:
“That this age will, end around 1977. …, I base this prediction on seven major continuous visions that came to me one Sunday morning in June, 1933. The Lord Jesus spoke to me and said that the coming of the Lord was drawing nigh, but that before He came, seven major events would transpire. ( W. Branham, THE MESSAGE TO THE LAODICEAN AGE, p.29).
I still maintain this prediction after thirty years because, Jesus DID NOT say no man could know the year, month, week or day in which His coming was to be completed. So I repeat, I sincerely believe and maintain as a private student of the Word, along with divine inspiration that 1977 ought to terminate the-World systems and usher in the millenium.” (Seven Church Ages Page 322)
There are more from this site:
http://www.letusreason.org/Latrain4.htm
Bentley himself said he received the mantle from William Branham’s angel. I don’t have the YouTube video handy but here’s a quote:

Dear “Erlend F.”:
“Apparantly, Todd Bentley’s angel is not William Branham’s angel. They do not share the same doctrines, and the characteristics of the angels are not the same.”
In Todd Bentley’s June 20, 2005 article, “The Coming Healing Revival–Part 2,” Bentley states that he was visited by the same angel that visited William Branham:
“God is bringing the supernatural realm right to our door, so to speak! We can break something open in our lives and in our cities because there are angels being released at this set time. I’ve had over 30 encounters with an angel by the name of Healing Revival that was a part of the Voice of Healing, in the days and ministry of William Branham. This same angel that came to William Branham came to me in Grants Pass, Oregon on December 5, 2000 when we were ministering in a large tent. Later the angel visited us in Albany, Oregon where we experienced a real emphasis on healing, miracles, signs and wonders for about four to five months.”
Verify this from Todd Bentley’s website at:
http://www.freshfire.ca/index.php?Act=read&status=teaching&Id=86&pid=954
William Branham also denied that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and many other false teachings.
Please remember that false prophets lead people away from the truth of God’s word, and a false “Jesus” doesn’t have the authority or power to save, sanctify, and redeem the sinner.
Hope this helps.
Love in Christ,
Bud

Bud,
Thanks for providing the link on Branham since I couldn’t find what I was looking for.
I could not find Hinn’s attorney’s response to you via the link you provided. Could you send another?
I’ve called Hinn a heretic in a post above. Maybe his attorney will come after me. Well, you can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip!

Thanks, Lee. You’re welcome.
When I received the letter from Benny Hinn’s attorney, I was a cult-evangelist and local director with Watchman Fellowship in Florida. While I am unsure of the exact date of the letter (early 1990’s??), the letter itself was forwarded to Watchman Fellowship for their files.
In the past I have looked high-and-low for a copy/photostat of the letter in my files, but no success.
Watchman Fellowship’s website is http://www.watchman.org . You may want to contact the following and ask them to send you a copy:
James Walker (President): jwalker@watchman.org
David Henke: dhenke@watchman.org

Bud,
Thanks for the above. I apparently misunderstood what you were saying in the initial email as I was assuming the link would show the attorney’s letter and then the ‘aftermath’ following the attorney’s letter [“check this out to see if the attorney’s warning paid off”]. I was mainly just curious.

Hi Lee, I should have been more specific when I wrote “check this out…” The link to the Benny Hinn page doesn’t include the letter from his attorney.
I feel certain the letter is floating around somewhere (buried in a ministry file cabinet?). Apparently, my copy of the letter was misplaced during moving to another state years ago.
If, by chance, I can find it, I will include it in the Benny Hinn page of my website.

Thanks, Lee.
I had some serious eye problems in the eary 1990’s, which led to my stepping away from the ministry for some time. During that time I distributed much of my research materials (books/audio/video, etc.) to numerous ministries nationwide.
Upon returning to the ministry years ago, I had to rebuild and pretty much start all over again. But that’s okay. Had I kept the materials I would have to rent a small building to store it. 🙂

This was really good reading. Thanks!
This tells me we are sooooooooo close to the return of our Lord. After all, there is so much deception right within the body of Christ.
Everything in this world is pointing people to “something more than what’s here right now”. Right up to Oprah talking about her new radio show on spirituality – and how she urges all her listeners to pay attention – that it’ll change their lives, just as it’s changed hers…
And that she REALLY looks forward to “Karmageddon”…
This world is crying out for Jesus but doesn’t even realize it. The fields are white for harvest and winning people to the Lord right now is easier than ever!

After reading this entire site – start to finish – I wanted to touch on a couple things.
r180 noted on 6/1 that he really puts a lot of weight in the ‘experiential’ with God. I remember starting my Christian walk in a charismatic church in 1981 and yeah, it felt great – the singing in tongues sounded heavenly, and it just felt like ‘wow!’ all the time. I heard Kenneth Copeland speak at my church, TL Osborne, Kenneth Hagin, John Osteen and others. It was one big ‘wow’.
I also remember TELLING God to do this or do that and reminding Him “because it’s according to your Word!” and not seeing a whole lot come to pass. After all, I was doing what I had been told to do by my pastor and his mentor teachers as noted above.
I thought I was head and shoulders above all the ‘other’ Christians who ‘only’ went to their little denominational churches, who ‘only’ did old fashioned religious stuff, who weren’t experiencing God.
Now on this note, let’s just say I’m glad my non-charismatic mother, who’s a prayer warrior, was on her face begging God to lead me to where I needed to be. Because in the midst of ‘experiencing’ this marvelous new fervor, “holy laughter” came into the picture.. OK, here I am, a new Christian and I’m in this service when everyone starts laughing hysterically. SOMETHING in my heart said, ‘back up and just watch’. So I did. I watched a person, laughing hysterically, crumple to the floor and stretch out on their back, still laughing like crazy. They were on the floor at the base of the podium. While laughing hysterically, they rolled UP the stairs.
r180, that was definitely ‘experiential’ and there were other experiential things that happened as well but you know what? I became convicted that even though the ‘wow’ was there for a lot of it, that it still jjjjjjust didn’t line up with God’s Word. I kept asking myself, “OK, I know Jesus did a lot of stuff that isn’t even written in this book, but the stuff that IS written in here just doesn’t even come close to….”
So you’re where I was 26 years ago. You’re into the ‘wow’ of it whether you know it or not. So I’ve lifted you in prayer and will continue to do so, asking God to ‘allow you’ to see the truth and asking Him to please lead you to where you need to be.
There’s nothing wrong with winning unbelievers to Jesus, discipling them, getting excited about how much God loves us by sacrificing His son in our place. Because when I think about Jesus dying in my place, WOW, then the experiential really hits home!

Sad Parent, what a really great point. What better experience than to lead someone to the Lord. No jemstones, gold dust, holy laughter or all the fake expereinces in the world could ever be as exciting as that.

The truly SAD part of the whole Todd Bently, IHOP, Word Faith thing is that they have taken that very thing (winning people to the Lord) and placed it WAY down at the bottom of the totem pole – as though it were the very least of the things of importance.
Never mind that Jesus told us to do that very thing!

The church has really lost its way. It no longer wants to lead people to Jesus Christ. Instead people want to feel the experiences so that they can be one with themselves.

Bentley Explains: On June 8, 2008, Todd Bentley posted on his ministry’s website a detailed letter explaining a number of things that people are confused or stumbling over regarding the outpouring and himself, and in which he appeals for unity in the Body of Christ. We have found this letter to be solidly Biblical, balanced, well-written, and quite helpful. It can be found at this link: http://www.freshfire.ca/?Id=1059&pid=993.
Biblical Scholar provides theological support: Dr. Gary S. Greig, PhD., former Associate Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Regent University School of Divinity, and Senior Editor, Theology and Acquisitions for the Regal Publishing Group, has written a theological response to questions and criticisms of the Lakeland outpouring. Dr. Greig recently wrote “Biblical Reasons to Receive God’s Glory and Give it Away in Power Evangelism,” so that as many as possible would receive “biblical permission” to get on board and fully commit to receiving the Lord’s glory and anointing, and to give it away in power evangelism. You can find his paper at this link: http://www.freshfire.ca/UserFiles/File/drGreg_biblicalperspective2008.pdf.

Hi Rudy:
After reading your post, I spent some time on your church website and learned that while you have concerns and disagreements about Todd Bentley and the Lakeland revival, you support the revival and are “impressed” with Todd Bentley.
In your article titled, “The Lakeland Outpouring-A Wonderful Move of God,” you state in part that:
“We are well acquainted with the concerns and criticisms expressed by some about the outpouring and Todd Bentley, some of which we share. And while we do not agree with everything that is being said and done in Lakeland, nor with all the theological views held by the leadership, we nevertheless believe this to be a genuine outpouring of God’s Spirit and are encouraging our church to seek after all that God is doing through this present move. We have known of Todd’s ministry for about four years and few people have impressed us more than Todd when it comes to having a passionate pursuit of Jesus and a heart for the lost” (http://www.barrhavennewlifechurch.ca/Lakeland_Revival_Bentley.html).
For the benefit of the DiscernIt readers, please share the concerns and disagreements you have with Todd Bentley and the Lakeland revival. Your doing so may help us to have a better understanding.
Thanks, Rudy.
In Christian love,
Bud
