How God Rescued Me From Bill Johnson’s Cult
by Shofar B. From ClosingStages.net
Last year around Christmas time, I was part of a prayer group where I live. It was a small group that met 1-2 times a week. All of us were DESPERATELY seeking God. It was a good fellowship. One evening after the session ended, I was tinkering around on the drums when one of the brothers, Dan came up to me with a look of soft urgency in his eyes.
Seeming not to notice that I was in deep focus trying to perfect a drum rudiment, he proceeded to interrupt me with a question…in a notch above whispering my name he asked me, ”have you ever heard of Bill Johnson??” Still working out drum patterns and attempting to simultaneously reply, I answered…”I ‘ve heard the name before. I know he’s in California but I don’t know much about him.”
At this response, I saw Dan’s face light up as if he had just received a shot of adrenaline. I knew he was ready to share, so sensing this, my drumming gradually teetered off into a complete silence. It was then that Dan began to advise and enlighten me about Bill Johnson’s Bethel Church in Redding Ca. Also he gave me the scoop about the churches School of Supernatural Ministry. [Side note: I hate typing for long periods of time so this is going to be a truncated account and I’ll add more details over time.] Okay, so Dan who has no binding ties to Bethel, suddenly sounded like one of their top recruiters/ pitchmen.
He began to tell me about how the presence of God permeated and saturated the campus at Bethel. He RAVED about the school. He RAVED about the music in the worship services. He RAVED about the teachings of Bill Johnson and Kris Vallatton. He raved about everything from the prayer tower to the coffee shop. After about an hour and a half of what could’ve EASILY qualified to have been a top notch infomercial, Dan made me an offer that two weeks later I found out…”I couldn’t refuse.” Dan told me that he was so confident that my walk with Christ would intensify by leaps and bounds by going to Bethel, that if I agreed to go, NOT ONLY would he pay my transportation there…he would also PAY THE $9000.00 Tuition required to attend the School of Supernatural Ministry.
At the time it really sounded cool, but I was comfy here at home and saw no need to make any rash moves. However, later, some things were being shaken up at home and I began to lose peace. I remembered Dan telling me of the intense peace that was present aroung the Bethel atmosphere. Being that he contacted frequently to pitch me on Bethel after that prayer meeting night, it was during one of the times we made contact…I succumbed. I said okay Dan…I’ll go check it out. The next day we were at the Greyhound station. However, I got cold feet and asked for more time to think about it. After all this was new territory for me, new town, nowhere to live, new people was no big deal…I’m as gregarious as they come. I LOVE PEOPLE!!! Anyway, after thinking about it, I took the dive. The next day I was off to Redding. Set up with a nice motel, I found my way to Bethel the next day, and this would be the beginning of the road to my NIGHTMARE. Please note though, it didn’t start out that way.
When I attended Bethel for the first time it was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!! And that ”love” would continue for the next two months. I immediately called Dan to tell him how right he was about everything. I even went on to tell him that he UNDERSTATED his description. I SWORE that I had died and gone to heaven. People seemed to really love Jesus. The view from the top of the mountain was ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING!!! There was something going on ALL OF THE TIME…LITERALLY 24/7. Being one that’s GREEDY FOR GOD, it was the perfect milieu for me and my insatiable appetite for HIM. There were ubiquitous house groups within the community and I loved attending them. It reminded me of the New Testament church in Acts.
I went to EVERY possible function that I could, and there were ”ZILLIONS”. During a house meeting I was offered a place to stay…for FREE. And that was just in the nick of time as I began running out of money. A few days later, I began living with students from Bethel’s school. Still floating on a cloud, I just seemed to see God’s hand moving at every turn I made. Even from my first visit, I would get myriad ”words of knowledge” spoken to me by many people EVERYDAY. I still have them written down. I think maybe ONE came true, but I know NOW that it was just a lucky guess..the rest em’?? UN-lucky guesses…lol.
So to make a long story short , I absorbed every thing Bethel offered I dove in seven days a week. I had my first ”fire tunnel” experience at a house…my first impression…OVERRATED!! While everyone else that went through it laughed and convulsed hysterically, I was unaffected EVEN in spite of the countless attempts of others to ”IMPART” (one of their buzz words) into me what they were feeling.
Also, I found it strange that I couldn’t even communicate with people even about simples matters like the weather or a basketball game without them jerking, shaking or convulsing…these convulsions were so profuse within the cult that for me it QUICKLY became overkill.
Another idiosyncrasy was the constant belting out of the phrase…”’WHOA” OR ”WOE” This is heard constantly. Still seeing through rose colored glasses though, I overlooked the weird behavior and justified it by concluding that ”God loves it when his kids are having fun with Him” Gradually though, I started deducing that this wasn’t mere fun…it was borderline mockery, the shaking, the jerking, the laughing, the cackling, the convulsing….it just went on TOOOO MUCH!!! If it were done in moderation, it may have gone undetected by me, but this was INSANE!!!
Later, I started noticing a LOT of name dropping from the pulpit (mostly from Bill Johnson) of false prophets and wolves like Bob Jones, Patricia King, Todd Bentley, Heidi Baker, and a plethora of others… This was constant, and when these names were mentioned, cheers went up with the fervor and magnitude of a Super Bowl touchdown reaction. During my entire time there, I NEVER ONCE heard Jesus get even a fraction of that type of praise, worship, or delightful frenzy. I might add that NEVER ONCE did I hear salvation, repentance, holiness, righteousness, judgment, or wrath preached, neither from the pulpit nor when I’d travel the streets with them. The whole business plan (because it’s NOT a ministry) is to focus on LYING signs and wonders….impotent magic tricks. I’ve always wondered why Bill would rave about all of these so-called and UNDOCUMENTED ”miracles” happening through Bethel around the world, YET, when it comes to home, we never get to see any of em’ manifested. For instance, Bill and his wife both wear prescription glasses…where’s the healing?? Bill had a hernia surgically removed…WHAT??? No miracle?? Bill’s son Eric is deaf and has a speech impediment…C’mon Bill…that’s your son..HEAL HIM!!!…Bill and his wife have gray hair (a sign of zinc deficiency)…but no ”supernatural” intervention has taken place, yet all of this GREAT stuff is happening EVERYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT HOME ON BETHEL’S TURF!!! Gimme a break!!!.
The real thing that got me though was the death of little J.C. the infant of two dear Korean friends of mine. He died from cancer at two years old. Prayers went out for him every second of the day. People jerked, shook, laughed, convulsed, spoke in (FAKE/DEMONIC) tongues over him…the works…and when he died, we were left with feeble excuses like ”God needed him more” kind of CRAP!!! Around this time
I had already stopped going to the church. When I first got there, for the first two months, because God gifted me with charisma, celebrity looks (and I don’t say that arrogantly) and the ability to draw people, I instantly became EXTREMLEY popular. By the time I left Redding, I was considered a pariah in some circles and cliques within. Even though I lived with Bethel students, I began to expose Bethel, Bill Johnson, Kris Vallaton, Danny Silk, and ALL of the celebrity WOLVES in their within their evil and deceptive cabal. People that used to ”love” me (so they said), snubbed me on the streets. They unfriended me on facebook. They’d give me looks of sheer disdain whenever we’d cross paths…we’re talkin’ some of the same people that I’ve prayed with, broke bread with, and had gotten venerably intimate with. When I stopped going to the church and began staying home and listening to REAL MINISTERS OF GOD like Michael Boldea and Mike Hoggard, Paul Washer and David Eells, I got flack from my roommates saying that those guy were mad and didn’t know God.They asked me not to play their sermons But I’d ignore their comments and continued to feed on what was REAL GOSPEL. I would often challenge my roomies and other Bethel ”robots” on Bill and Kris’ theology and their twisted new age ”sermons” WITH SCRIPTURE and it ceased to surprise me anymore that they’d rebuttle my challenges with quotes from one of Bill or Kris’ books. IMAGINE THAT!!! They ALWAYS tried to refute GOD’S WORD with quotes from books written by their false teachers. Can you say MIND CONTROL???
So after 2 months, I stopped going. I continued to live with the students because it was a ”phat crib” OR, a nice house for those who are linguistically challenged in ”SLANG”…LOL I was paying rent by this time in a new home and different students. The landlord approached me one day while shooting ball in the yard and told me that if I didn’t start attending Bethel and doing what they call ”SOZO” classes (which is simply /new age mysticism/chanting/ contemplative prayer or ”soaking” kinda stuff) that I would have to find somewhere else to live. It was my 4th month in Redding and that was my ”Q” to leave. My wife was on the phone when this happened. I had my bluetooth in my ear and the landlord wasn’t aware that I was on a phone call at the time. My wife COULD NOT BELIEVE HER EARS!!! We both knew it was time to ”GIT OUTTA DARE”.
I became good friends with Mike Hoggard while going through that trying period, and he REALLY helped sustain me in prayer and encouraging words. I initially was going to relocate to where he is and get some discipleship and restoration. But God led me home. Let me give you one more story here before I close. There was a class held every Sunday called ”Fire Starters” birthed out of the Toronto Blessing movement. This class was supposed to ..get this…”TEACH” PEOPLE HOW TO PROPHESY…LOL!!! Yes…I laughed too!! So anyway, every class people were randomly called to the front of the room, they were lined up, and asked to pick someone in the room and give them a word of knowledge…BUT THERE WERE RULES…WHAT EVER YOU SAID HAD TO BE SWEET, KIND, AND MAKE THE PERSON ”FEEL” GOOD…Those are the rules verbatim!!!
After weeks of seeing this nonsense and people stating the obvious and touting it as hearing from God, out of frustration, one Saturday night, I decided to MAKE UP, FABRICATE a ”word of knowledge” just in case I would be picked out to prophesy in tomorrow’s class. And whaddaya know…I get picked. When my turn came, I shared my FABRICATED ”word’. It was this, ”there’s someone here who’s been strategizing suicide, and the devil is tormenting you. If you’ll raise your hand, we can pray for you and you can be released.” Much to my surprise, a hand went up…WOW….I’m like okay God, you used my prank to REALLY get someone’s attention. ”Praise You”.
But I was about to get an even BIGGER surprise, because, I immediately thought the room would shut down and people would bombard this poor girl who planned to take her life, so they could pray and labor over her soul, but NO!!! That’s NOT what happened. Instead, I got reprimanded by Kevin Dedmond, one of the ”leaders” (you can see his crap on you tube w/Sid Roth),and I was told that I’m to only say things that make people feel good. And they resumed right back into letting people perform their exercises of divination, cause that’s what it REALLY is.
More upsetting is that when class dismissed, out of a room of about 150ppl, I only saw 2 people (excluding myself), a couple go minister to that girl…everyone else??? Well, they were too anxious to go through the FRUITLESS ”fire tunnel” so that they could appease their flesh…and so they did…THEY LAUGHED, THEY JERKED, THEY SHOOK, THEY CONVULSED, THEY WRITHED IN THE FLOOR, and to this very day…they call it GOD.
When they finally DO meet God they’ll not be laughing anymore!!! I’d like to thank Pat Rogers from ”ANGRY SHEEP” for encouraging me to share this with you all. Believe me, there’s soooooooooo much more to share and I’ll add on as things come to mind. You have to realize that I only hunt and peck 20 wpm, so typing , for now anyway, isn’t my forte. Getting ready to take classes though. Please forgive any type-o’s. Love You All in the Lord and I pray that in some way you were blessed, edified, or educated through this writing. God Bless You, Shofar

You know, for several years I was a part of a church that had loose ties with Bethel. Also folks from there went to Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship, and conferences connected with the Spokane Healing Rooms, etc. A couple from that church worked at the Healing Rooms and we had students go to the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry.
While what we experienced at church wasn’t as intense as what this man is talking about, pretty much all of the elements were there. I think maybe the only thing missing was being taught how to prophecy. And thank God, we did still hear about Jesus and salvation. Those elements hadn’t been eliminated from our midst.
But my point is that my experience tells me that what this man is saying is true. He is not at all likely to be making this stuff up. This stuff is very real.
(I hope this comes through in a readable fashion. This comment box seems to not be working very well this a.m.)

Thanks for sharing your testimony. I remember listening in on God T.V. To the revival in Florida. I was very intrigued and wished to be there. Bill Johnson was speaking one night and everyone was getting whipped up into a frenzy with the drumbeat beating away. He kept repeating “face like a lion.” At that time I thought they all were “sooo spirit filled!”
Soon thereafter God directed me away from that movement. I think I heard Todd Friel’s radio program. From there I progressively learned of true men of God. I was so hungry for truth and The Lord provided! Talk about a 180!!!
That was in 2008 and after learning many basic doctrines which is unheard of in those fleshly church’s, I now have the freedom to love Christ in all His Sovereign grace, His love that called me and the true gifts that He has given me.
What a deception the “signs, wonders and miracles” is. I can still hear that music from their Internet show! I praise God for not letting me get caught up in that garbage.
Also, I was looking for healing rooms in Spokane. Glad I didn’t find them!

I will never forget so long ago after describing an experience I had, someone asked, “How do you know it is from God?” It was like wow…not from God? Never occurred to me, then I started praying for truth.
I am glad you did not find those healing rooms either, Arlene. I have corresponded with someone who had a brother in a mental institution after his involvement with SOZO.

Bethel Church and Jesus Culture band are false prophets and teach false doctrines, which more closely resemble a cult of wicked wiccans & wizards. Then any facts found in Scripture. They are professional scripture-twisters. And their members go out into the world and seek to lie about Jesus Chirst and The Holy Spirit, as mctaught by their mcpastor. Kim Walker Smith head songstress of Jesus Culture fraud god group, is now seen on the internet professing her new age, on stage trance which included a big giant jesus running by Kim yelling – wooowhooooo!!!! Then claiming jesus took his = “stretch armstrong arms” and ended with scooping Kim up and placing her in his heart hole??? All this in front of impressionable young people. Who do not discern this whole “trance testimony” as NEVER something Jesus taught as anywhere near OK. Triune Holy Living Creator GOD teaches man cannot look upon the face of GOD and live! So Kim Walker Smith is a false prophet. Along with her sinister minister Bill Johnson who claimed gold hair spray, sprayed back stage into the air, was the “sha-kine-aa glory cloud”…??? Sadly this kind of false teaching and various endless heretic doctrines of demons and hysterical ungodly demonstrations is the new normal for too many churches, who troll for low information attendees who are all now seeking “feelings” over actual factual Biblical TRUTH. This church blames victims of illness or disease as not being holy enough. As if the Holy Spirit leaks out and needs a mere human to flop and flip and scream gibberish to get refilled. That kind of teaching is pure egoic evil & not something Jesus ever taught. So Bethel church needs to buy a Pastor John MacArthur study bible. And watch all his YouTube videos. Then REPENT and say they are sorry for all the lives they have so carelessly ruined (see post above). And people need to be bold and discuss the evil happenings of this church and it’s offspring. Good job – and well done – good and faithful servant for posting this. May you be blessed and know your simple post saved a lot of people great heartache. Keep posting.

Sta rooted in scripture and don’t allow bitterness to grow within.

absolutely agree… I came out of a “bethelized” church in the UK that had adopted every wind of strange & false doctrine of demons – coming out of Bethel… so concerned about the impact this is having in the UK – we set up a UK blog.. http://www.rooftopsandrafters.wordpress.com….. I wouldnt be far off saying every single church in the UK that considers itself to be “charismatic” is being sucked into Bethel – some more than others & in different ways… to one degree or another…

Thanks for sharing your testimony. Your testimony seems to give more credibility to Andrew Strom’s ‘Kundalini Spirit’ book- which talks about that. I recall a couple coming to my church that was really into Bethel. They actually went there for a time. Their spiritual depth was about a 1/4 inch deep but they had watched all the Bill Johnson broadcasts, read all his books, and anyone who taught similar things: they knew of or read their doctrines.
My church does believe in miracles, signs, and wonders and walking in the authority to do them, but not because we think it is cool or will enhance our church experience. Rather it is a sign to those who don’t believe, that there is power in the gospel, and that our Christ is resurrected and alive. When these individuals came along, they would ‘prophesy’ during worship, but it was always that we weren’t seeking God/worshipping God enough. We weren’t at their standard of manifest presence, so we needed to get deeper in order to make that happen.
They could believe that revival was coming to our town…until they were rebuked for their attitudes and doctrine. Then, “God is not in this place!” What was extremely signature of this spirit is that they never had character, nor possessed the fruits of individuals who genuinely understood what it meant to be saved, and how insignificant we were in comparison to the majesty and worth of God. To them, they were the main character of this story, they were the ones to overcome the evil one, they were the ones to win the souls, do the works, attain holiness.
Like you, I had been caught up into this deception for a time. Though I could never explain it, Bill Johnson’s words never rooted in me, never gave me anything to run with. It was always allegorical smoke and mirrors, twists on words that rolled off the tongue, and cool catch phrases.
I am so thankful that our God gives us grace and protects us even from things we’re unaware of- so long as we are responding to that grace.

Wow what a disappointing “testimony”. Here is mine, since coming into contact with Bethel I have grown in faith and expectation and begun to know the Father more intimately, and had spheres of life in the Spirit open up. I have seen people healed miraculously, I have seen people blessed hugely and I have seen break through financially and in jobs. I don’t jerk or shake. I don’t put anything on, and I don’t pretend for anyone. But they have something from God. It is not a cult. Bethel never claim that everyone is healed or that you don’t need medicine. They actually believe in medicine, and the hold onto the miraculous and faith even in the face of experiences where people might have died. Maybe thats a key to their breakthrough. But a lot of people are healed too. I have seen this personally, and I have had first hand experience. I have also seen prophetic words given that are accurate and powerful.
I don’t know what the landlord said to you but you have no idea what sozo is. What you said here is really inaccurate and untrue. I mean honestly, that is just pure misrepresentation.
At the end of the day there has never been a movement of God that wasn’t persecuted by someone, and that often unfortunately that included the church. Check out the history of revival.
Blessings

Dean,
Thank you for writing but you may be wise to heed the warnings of those who became afflicted in this false ministry.
People can be healed, but here is the deal…If you have ever read the accounts of someone like Kurt Koch, a Christian who is an expert in occultism, you will learn that even the demonic forces can heal. The shamans have this power but it is not from God. Someone in my family long ago was healed by Oral Roberts but quickly suffered mentally.
If you open your Bible and do a study about the Holy Spirit, by looking up all the verses you will learn His role. The Spirit always points to Jesus and when the Holy Spirit fills people in the NT it always gives them power to profess the Gospel.
I have seen people in revival. They can barely stand themselves because they become so aware of their sin and how Holy the Lord is. Picking up a cross and following Jesus has nothing to do with financial gain or jobs. In fact we may be asked to give up everything. What we are to treasure has nothing to do with worldly things or lusts of the flesh…..
I once was deceived when I started receiving “words”….Some came true…this is not a factor, for the devil can see our circumstances and can whisper the lies into our ears. Satan laughs when those think his lies are from God. I know from experience that it can be a joyful time…I wept with joy thinking I was being used so greatly…but this too is not a factor…the emotions. The emotions deceive for our hearts are wicked.
Anyone not 100% correct is a false prophet.
I have dealt and prayed with people involved with the salvation, healing, deliverance, aspects of sozo….Much of it is occult contact with a spirit pretending to be Jesus…..but it is a false entity…some I know fell into deep depression and even started cutting themselves from this contact which is in reality divination.
If you are involved deeply….the oppression will come. Beware and repent of it before you are deeply harmed….please…

Lets understand this the, we pray to Jesus worship him, and spend time in His presence but when we believe his words and do what Jesus says and lay hands on someone to be healed – it is the devil??! Okay….so really the devil is way bigger than God is?
Or maybe you are doing what the Pharisees did in the bible and saying that “he heals by Beelzebub”.
Basically you are proposing a faith that has no miraculous power of any sort. That my friend is what put me off christianity for all of my early life in the first place i.e. dead religion. You can keep it.
Paul had something to say about this false religion – “having a form of godliness but denying the power”.
Why is dead religion always considered authentic and the real deal on these message boards, but whenever God does something it is “of the devil”?
December 27, 2013 at 5:35 pm
Kim
Oh didn’t take long to play the pharisee card…Actually, I walk in faith and the Lord has enabled me to serve Him in ways I am incapable.
Is my faith a dead faith? I think not. The Word of God comes alive for me. It convicts, comforts, strengthens, and is truth. It is my plumbline. The Holy Spirit gives a love to be in the Word and a love for prayer.
Anyway…I want to start by the verses that talk about the being in the presence of God.
Adam and Eve had intimate fellowship in the presence of God before the fall (Genesis 3:8). Since that time, sin has prevented our ability to be in the physical presence of God (Exodus 33:20). Now only the holy, sinless angels are in the physical presence of God (Luke 1:19). But Christians have the presence of God within us by virtue of His indwelling Holy Spirit (John 14:23, 15:4), and that indwelling presence comes only through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
What verses do you offer on this point? On Discernit you will have to bolster your position with scripture.
A study of the Pharisees is really very interesting..They added to the law because they couldn’t keep it…they were very spiritually proud but blind, they loved to be seen on the streets and praying in public.

I’m sorry you had the misfortune of falling in with these people. Yes, they are very much like Scientologists in the sense that they will turn against you viciously if you are a true believer in Christianity.
I was raised in some associated churches in Northern California and witness to so many false prophecies that it’s fortunate that we don’t live in the classical Christian period wherein these people would be put to death for their blasphemy and heresy. They covered up a pedophile ring in Northern California which was connected to Bethel apparently (http://imageshack.com/a/img856/8369/o1ic.jpg), as well as work closely with a local pornography producer: http://donnypauling.net/2007/07/26/bethel-is-a-really-weird-church/
It’s very shameful to have grown up under such chicanery.

Don’t forget that there were also people calling Jesus demonic for what He did…. (well, He WAS spitting in people’s eyes, mixing it with mud, casting out demons, etc.)
Jesus stated that if you attribute any work of the Holy Spirit to the DEVIL, that is the only unforgiveable sin!!!
I would be begging for forgiveness if I were you… unfortunately BLASPHEMY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS UNFORGIVEABLE.
February 13, 2014 at 6:06 pm

Lindsey, The verse you are referencing is always misused by false teachers.
Consider this teaching……
Question: “What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?”
Answer: The concept of “blasphemy against the Spirit” is mentioned in Mark 3:22-30 and Matthew 12:22-32. The term blasphemy may be generally defined as “defiant irreverence.” The term can be applied to such sins as cursing God or willfully degrading things relating to God. It is also attributing some evil to God, or denying Him some good that we should attribute to Him. This case of blasphemy, however, is a specific one, called “the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” in Matthew 12:31. In Matthew 12:31-32, the Pharisees, having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that the Lord was possessed by the demon “Beelzebub” (Matthew 12:24). Now notice that in Mark 3:30 Jesus is very specific about what they did to commit “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.”
This blasphemy has to do with someone accusing Jesus Christ of being demon-possessed instead of Spirit-filled. As a result, this particular incidence of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today. Jesus Christ is not on earth—He is seated at the right hand of God. No one can witness Jesus Christ performing a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the Spirit. The closest example today would be attributing the miracle of a redeemed person’s changed life to Satan’s power rather than to the effects of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
The blasphemy of the Spirit today, which is the same as the unpardonable sin, is the state of continued unbelief. There is no pardon for a person who dies in unbelief. Continual rejection of the Holy Spirit’s promptings to trust in Jesus Christ is the unpardonable blasphemy against Him. Remember what is stated in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Further on in the same chapter is the verse “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him” (John 3:36). The only condition wherein someone would have no forgiveness is if he is not among the “whoever believes in Him,” for it is he who “rejects the Son.”

Blue Letter Bible is a mainstream resource and here is what commentator David Guzik says about blasphemy of the Holy Spirit
“Blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven: Jesus solemnly warned the religious leaders against rejecting Him. Their rejection of Jesus – especially considered what they had seen of Jesus and His work – showed that they were to completely rejecting the Holy Spirit’s ministry. That ministry is to testify to Jesus, hence the warning of committing the unforgivable sin.”
“The Holy Spirit’s main ministry is to testify of Jesus (He will testify of Me, John 15:26). When that testimony of Jesus is fully and finally rejected, one has truly blasphemed the Holy Spirit and essentially called Him a liar in respect to His testimony about Jesus. The religious leaders were close to this.”

I’m a fellow beliver who has experienced revival first hand. I’ve been a pastor for many years and seen the good the bad and the ugly. Anytime man is at the control of a movement it can help or hurt people. Bill and people at bethel are exactly what I said they are, just people. Some times we have to throw away the bad and keep the good. There is no perfect church. And when you stand in front of people not everybody is going to agree with everything you believe. Pentecostal preachers like myself get a lot of grief from people for believing the bible. Let alone all the manifestations that come along with a move of the Holy Spirit. My advice to anybody who in any movement (they come and go) learn from them keep your eyes on Jesus. As for bethel, well I enjoy a lot of ministry that comes out of it, there music is on point, there people are not asleep at the wheel as most churches . Hey at least there trying to have a move of the Holy Ghost. Don’t allow how you perceive other follow Jesus, you follow Him. Nobody who is served Him never came back and said it was a mistake. Pray for bethel and others like them. Read some articles on welch revival , Azusa street, Charles parham , William Seymour … These men had opposition just as bethel.

A verse came to mind after reading your comment, especially the part where movements come and go.
Ephesians 4:14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Hi,I am a 15 year old born again female. I live in South Africa and I can safely say that I know God personally. By the help of the Holy Spirit,I feel his presence and I love God and adhere to the REAL GOSPEL because I accept correction from God. I love the testimony and @ the begining I thought it was great but as moved along I realised the purpose of this testimony. Its to let us all know that we shouldn’t ”like things”. We should have faith that we will grow spiritually also in our churches n that God will see our desperateness and deliver to our needs. We shouldn’t chase after big things that seemed to hav ”blossomed” but instead let’s blossom our so called ”little things” that we have. Thank You. Looking forward to hearing from you. ❤

Hello,
Nice to meet you.
Indeed these folks have lost sight of the Gospel message which in a nutshell deals with our sin. Instead they seek experiences, teaching healing which appeals to people. They seek God’s love without defining what His justice will be without Jesus shed blood.
I recently saw a clip of Johnson speaking to the audience about cartilege in their knees. I guess this would quality as seeking things instead of the Master.
I just added a new clip at the end of the article showing how Jenn Johnson has NO clue about the Holy Spirit. She is listening to the enemy.

HI Simon, thank you for taking the time to comment here.
First let’s clear up a few things. I did not write the article. You seem to be saying I am bitter and angry and this is simply not the case. I did once fall for a short season but I was delivered by the Lord from false theology and false experiences.
Many have written personally to me and others with sites like mine for deliverance and desperate for help from oppression caused by accepting the false spirits.
This blog was created after the Lord “called” me into the discernment ministry as one is called into missionary work. It was created to help others from their “pain and anger.” You are misguided in your assumptions.
Now I am going to ask you as I do others to bolster your positions with scripture.
Indeed God is love. But the Gospel message is so much more.
Read through 1 Corinthians 15:1-33. Paul starts out by stating what the Gospel is that he preached. The heart of the Gospel is that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and was then resurrected from the dead. Do you have any verses stating that love is the Gospel?
Please read
http://www.gotquestions.org/gospel-message.html
The accounts of Azusa which I have read do not line up with the Acts of the Apostles as they spoke the known languages of those around them. The list of languages they spoke are in verses Acts 2:8-11.
Also indeed we are free in our faith….but there is more. We are to carry a cross, and may lose our life for His sake. Matthew 38-39 There is a cost which would leave all behind. Matthew 8:18-22 God is good because he promises that the burden we carry will be light.
Jesus instructed us to watch out for false prophets. They will be in sheep’s clothing, so they will be IN the church. Matthew 7:15.
Those who do miracles and drive out demons may not even know the Lord “I never knew you” Matthew 7:21-23, so those who do this may be evildoers. So we are instructed to test the fruit.
Then Jesus says that those who hears these words but does not put them into practice is foolish. Matthew 7:26.
We cannot judge the hearts of others but we surely can make judgements and determinations based on scripture. The Matthew 7 passage on judging says to do not be a hypocrite when making a judgement.
Jesus said “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign. But none will be given but it except the sign of the Prophet Jonah. ” Matthew 12: 39
“For someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enought.
Many have come here for help and have been grateful. You may be turning some away who have been hurt by the Bethel leaders. And they exist. They have accepted another Jesus and another spirit.

Hi Kim.
Thanks for your reply. I didn’t say that love is the gospel. I said that the essence and core of the gospel message is love. This is consistent with the nature of God and the sacrifice that God chose and which Jesus endorsed when He went to the cross to redeem us back into fellowship with God.
You said correctly that Jesus instructed us to watch out for false prophets who would be in sheep’s clothing and therefore by inference, in the church, to which I restate my observation that there will always be those who walk in excess as revival also attracts the demonic and can excite the flesh in susceptible individuals. It does not mean that the whole church is false.
We are to make a judgement, but not to judge – in the way that being judgmental does – and this keeps us safe.
But to make accusations publicly without qualifying what the subtle and not so subtle anomalies are, is unhelpful. If vulnerable people are susceptible, then they need to be educated – the truth will find an echo in their hearts if we believe what is written in John 10 “My sheep hear my voice”. This is not intended to be contentious by the way, but to put love above controversy by actually stating what the false aspects of places like Bethel are in your mind and leading people gently away from them.
Can I ask how you deliver people from the false spirits you speak about please? Thanks.
Simon

Actually I do not deliver people from the false spirits but the Holy Spirit leads people to the truth. Also Jesus gives an example of how to confront Satan and Jesus did it with the Word. Three times he says ‘It is written.”
When I talk with people we pray together and look up scripture. It is unwise to trust the heart because Jeremiah said “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jer 17:9
That is why we are instructed to test all things because “some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits,” 1 Tim 4:1. The danger is becoming one of those in Revelation 19:20 deceived by the false prophet who “had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf and with these signs deluded those who had received the mark….”
Or consider 2 Thessalonians 2:9 which describes the work of Satan, “….displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders.” I like what commentator David Guzik says about this verse.
“i. If someone has spiritual power, signs, or wonders, those are not enough to prove they are from God. Satan can perform his own powerful works, either through deception or through his own resources of power.”
Exciting the flesh with the demonic is something that needs to be stopped completely. What can be more loving than to warn others and to pray with those inflicted. Looking the other way at “anomolies” is wrong. God hates a mixture and yeast infiltrates the whole batch.
Paul Gowdy walked away after being involved. His message is a great one and can be found in my testimony section.

‘God don’t need no matches, God is fire Himself’. If God agrees with you that Bethel is a cult, He will bring it down. Your role is not to judge or argue, but to pray that God’s will be done. Stop giving the devil reasons to laugh by being divided…..pray
.
April 19, 2014 at 1:18 pm
Kim
Hi Rosemarie…i see your comment is a quote. My I ask whose quote it is? The bible does say that God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:29. I like what David Guzik says about this verse…this chapter is about discipline and chastisement.
“Since God is in fact a consuming fire, we do best to come to Him on His terms. These are the terms of unmerited approval in Jesus. He will consume all that is outside of that sphere.”
When speaking of Bethel…strange fire comes to mind with the fire tunnels and the drunken behavior. The hebrew word strange means unauthroized or profane. Nadab and Abihu were drunk and they paid for it.
God does not destroy all cults. Mormonism and Jehovah witnesses are cults. They deviate from true Christianity. So we cannot use that as a plumbline.
You are right we should not argue but we certainly must we wise, make determinations, expose false teachers, run from them and warn others.

Where is the love of God in all of this? This is why the body is so divided. Is not Bethel church and whatever church you go to a part of the body? We can all agree that Jesus is Lord, but how do we respect each other’s beliefs and revelations? I’m sorry your experience sucked for you or any other people that have had the same experience. The Lord would have us to focus on the Lost who do not know Jesus as Lord and being love rather than bashing or exposing as you say, our brothers and sisters who have different understandings and practices.

I do not post anonymous comments as indicated in the “before you post” section above. But I decided to post this comment anyway.
Doctrine is our plumbline that we use to hold up teachings, practices, experiences, up against the Word to test the spirits.
Paul declares, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2 Timothy 4:3). Titus 1:9–2:1 proclaims, “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it…But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine.”
To separate from bad theology, (wakey, wakey….blue genies…farting angels…) from those who have prophesied something that did not come to pass, (Deut 18:21-22) from those who love the signs and wonders and ask for them , (a wicked generation, Matt. 12:39) is not a bad thing. It is a good thing.
Your thinking that all who says Jesus is Lord is part of the church is wrong. Matthew 7:21-23 says “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the kingdom of heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers.” So then what is your test?
I have no doubt that there are those who truly love the Lord and want to serve Him with all their hearts in places like Bethel. But they are being led astray.
Those who post their testimonies and warnings do so because they love the flock and their brothers and sisters in Christ, and do not want to see it ravaged by the wolves who dress in sheep’s clothing pretending to be part of church.
Three times in John 14 Jesus said that if we love Him we will obey him. Three times Jesus asks Peter if he loves him and three times tells Peter to feed and care for the sheep which will lead to martyrdom for His cause.

am in africa, and facing something like that. i have lost a lot now and trying to get up on my feet and recover the things l have lost. in america do you pray using the name of your spiritual father or pastor. plus can the holyspirit give authority a pastor to seal people for salvation. adding on are we supposed to talk and act like our pastors
April 25, 2014 at 8:31 am
Kim
SgB,
Blessings to you in the name of Jesus.
Last night during my Bible study I was thinking how many people’s faith are shipwrecked by false shepherds.
We should pray in Jesus’ name. I usually start prayer with “Heavenly Father” and end “in Jesus’ name.”
Paul taught to always give thanks to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20. Jesus said that whatever was asked in HIs names and was according to HIs will would be granted. John 15:16 -16:23.
The Holy Spirit helps us pray in His power, especially when we do not know what to ask for. Romans 8:26
Never pray in the name of the Pastor. This would be a form of idolatry and false worship. Worship is reserved for God and God alone. Pray to God, and God alone.
I do not believe that a pastor can seal people for salvation.
We receive the Holy Spirit by receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior (John 3:5-16) we are to then pick up a cross and abide in Him.
I have listened to many sermons and many godly men teach the Word of God. I think they would be horrified if we were to pattern our lives and follow them instead of Jesus Christ. Why? Scripture says we are to desire to be like Christ and to grow in Him.
Romans 12:1-2 tells us emphatically that the process of filling our minds with the knowledge of God not only brings us closer to Christlikeness, but obedience to that knowledge aligns us with the perfect will of God: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Read more: http://www.gotquestions.org/more-like-Christ.html#ixzz2zuW5dY3E
The false teachers will focus on many things like wealth, healing, blessings, while the true shepherds will expose our sin and teach us to pray, teach us the Word of God and help us in our holiness. It is walk of endurance and testing as we grow in our faith.

This is the letter I wrote to the record searchlight. I’ve got to tell of what I found when I went to bethel church. After all, this is happening right in our front yards. I’ve been seeing strange things on the internet about bethel. Things such as grave sucking, prayer tarot cards and orb chasing which are of the bethel school of supernatural ministries. I went to bethel to find out about these things. I asked an information desk clerk if grave sucking is something thats taught at bssm. He told me that bssm doesn’t teach that. Students do that on their own. I asked him why doesn’t senior pastor bill johnson put a stop to that. He just shrugged his shoulders. I also asked him about orb chasing. It turns out that he does that himself. Otherwise, the church itself was mostly a concert and they even have a coffee shop inside of the church. Now people, I ask you, am I the only one to find the above bizaar? Don’t get me wrong, the followers of bethel are a very peaceful people. However, so were the followers of jim jones, right up to the point of drinking the poisoned kool aid. Again, this is happening in our front yards and soon bethel will take over our town. People need to be aware. Well, this is the letter that got printed on easter sunday folks. If you have a testimony about bethel now would be the time to tell this newspaper about it and you may become a guest columnist to do so. Gods blessings to all.

l am also eager to understand this thing. in one of our preachings, they make posters, stickers and calenders which have got their images. they encourage us to have those and they say it represents the anointing. They say place them on your cars, walls of your house. They are for your protection and good for you, some even wear bangles written their apostles, pastors, bishops name on them. Some use the scriptural reference of how Paul’s shadow and cloth used to heal people. so they say these also carry the same power. l do not believe this at all. help!!!!!

My friend as Im a former wiccan of 30 years what you described above is called talismanic magick.
April 25, 2014 at 9:50 pm

sgb….to put faith in such things is indeed magick, sorcery and idolatry.
Timothy….I met a wiccan once and she was very powerful…she tried to put a spell on me after I witnessed to her. I was also long ago, in some spiritual trouble by being “open” to such things and could hear her chanting at midnight. I prayed to the Lord to close this ability I had as it was not a gift from the Lord. Maybe only you would know what I mean. I was once oppressed by prescription drugs but was freed.
Many of us have known and recognize the power and draw of the seducing spirits…Satan does masquerade as an angel of light. . hence the desire to warn others. Thank you Jesus for opening our eyes to the truth.

Wiccans generally don’t do curses on people. There are two laws they must follow that forbids it according to the wiccan rede. The threefold law and eight words the wiccan rede fulfill, in that it harm none do as ye will. However, you may have ran into a black magic witch or magician and wiccans really do keep away from them to keep their karmas clean. In this case, if you ever run into such people that say they’re wiccan but practice black magick on you say to them to remember the threefold law as karma dictates that what you send out in ritual and spellwork will come back at you three times fold. And then pray to Jesus to protect you from nasty spells and to throw such spells in the lake of fire where it belongs. The problem here is not the pagans. The problem here is bethel adopting such powers and abusing them even worse than black magicians. Pagans are supposed to practice magick. But according to the bible christians are not and thats exactly what bethel has violated.

Thank you for clarifying. It happened long ago and was puzzling. I do remember that she said she was a White Witch, worshipped a female Goddess, called upon arch angels and did not believe in Satan.
I do see parallels in the church today with angel worship, Sophia worship, earth worship, etc.

The witch you ran into was certainly not a white witch or wiccan according to what I observed about those walking the left hand path. In my opinion based on what I seen so far bethels magick is worse as its directed to a mass people and brainwashing our youth. Otherwise, if you need more information on the parallels of comparing bethel with pagan beliefs and legends I’ll be glad to give it. Peace be with you.

I have seen on tbn the healings of bethel in Redding. Testimonies about it seemed very sincere and they even produced doctors papers as proof of the success of their healings. However, I noticed that no doctors were interviewed. What do you think of this? I learned from the record searchlight opinion cite that students of bssm meet at the redding civic auditorium on thursdays. I plan on going there to ask questions as to what they’re taught in that coven. Also, I looked this up on google and found a psychic dictionary that was presented by a christian. From this dictionary there are occult terms that apply to virtaully everything charismatics do. I’ll keep you inforned on what I find out from bssm students.

Kim, I have a question for you. Bethel is right that God can manifest into this world however he wants. But I been reading scripture of how God and the holy spirit have manifested into this world in the past. When God came he manifested as a cloud by day and piller of fire by night and he always announced himself. The holy spirit had came by way of a rushing wind in the church and as cloven tongues over peoples head. Is the bible in this way a standard of how God and the holy spirit would manifest into this world according to the discription of how they manifested in the past? I need to know this for my talks with bssm students come sept. 8 Peace be with you.

That is kind of a loaded question. Although my first thought was that the Holy Spirit of the OT has many of the same roles in the NT. Regeneration, revealing truth, conviction of sin, sealing, drawing. Jesus promised us more…”another helper, that He may be with you forever, that is the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see or know Him, but you will know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17
The Holy Spirit enables us to testify or witness for him, He calls us for special service, He intercedes and He guides us to Jesus….John 16:13-15
The Holy Spirit never elevates himself but always points to Jesus.
I just opened up to this in MacArthur’s book Strange Fire.
“…they deny his true work. They attribute all kinds of silliness to Him while ignoring the genuine purpose and power of His ministry: freeing sinners from death, giving them everlasting life, regenerating their hearts, transforming their nature, empowering them for spiritual victory, confirming their place in the family of God, interceding for them according to the will of God, sealing them for their eternal glory, and promising to raise them to immortality in the future,”
There are entire books written about the role of the Holy Spirit today..
You might consider these articles.

Hope this helps….maybe others have some suggestions.

Kim, thanks for the info and prayers. I’ll have to ask the same of bssm students just to get an idea of what they think about it and compare their answeres when I get the answeres of the above question I asked you. By the way are you one that believes that speaking in tongues was actually a different known human language and that such miracles stopped at the apostles? Be careful of John MacArthur. Paul washer has a problem with him as John is a calvinist. In fact watch Paul Washer the real power of the holy spirit on youtube. He says much that applies to charismatics. Blessings.

I have been reading both MacArthur and Washer for a long time. I do not believe that for the most part what I am seeing and hearing regarding tongues is a true gift. I believe that yes, they spoke real languages at Pentecost. I have heard of a few accounts where the true gift happened to spread the Gospel. I believe that new revelation stopped at the closing of the Canon, and that God still does miracles but at His will.

Kim, if you prayed for me to get the answeres I was looking for it worked. According to paul washer presence of God youtube I can judge claimed miracles as well as the presence of God by the biblical accounts of how he manifested in the past. If this is correct its a great way to discern spirits. Otherwise, yesturday I called up bethel church to see when is the next bssm class. I wanted to know this so that I could talk to bssm students , ask questions about bssm and most importantly do a prayer upon them for Gods protection. I was told that the next day was graduation day for first year students. When I arrived on sundial bridge this morning I ran into three bssm students. I told them about bethels activities on the internet. They said that they never heard of grave sucking or orb chasing. Just in case they were never tought that yet I told them to look for these things and if they start teaching such things to give me a call. I gave them my phone number. I also gave them a list of internet sites to check out. A lot of it were sites such as this. But I felt more compelled to give them paul washer sites of videos such as 10 indictments against the modern church in America and the real power of the holy spirit which is all on youtube. But before I left we exchanged prayers and I asked for Gods protection in my head as they prayed for me. When it came to my turn I prayed for all of them saying, In the name of the real God, the real Jesus christ and the real holy spirit, I pray that if bethel is a cult that these people be protected by you from them . Reveal bethel to these people and open their eyes. And please protect them from death until they do know what bethel is. I don’t want to see them going to hell for following a false prophet. Please protect them from hell. I ask for this prayer to be answered in the name of the real God, the real Jesus and the real holy spirit. Amen. I planted the seed and Im leaving it up to God. Now that I had a students view of bethel I went to the civic auditorium where they were having the graduation. I asked to talk about bssm with someone there to get the official view. Someone was glad to talk to me up until the point of asking about things of bethel that shows up on the internet. At that point I got kicked out by this guy. What do they have to hide I wondered. But before I left the guy asked me for my last name. When I turned around he had his camera phone at me. Now honestly I don’t know if he took pictures of me. But I did find it odd that he would want my last name. I asked him what he wanted it for. He never gave me a reason. When I called up bethel to tell them this the lady had no opinion about this as she doesn’t know the full story. But I was set up to talk to someone about the questions I have. Until then this is what happened. We’ll see what they have to say. Blessings.

How bold you were to approach students and what a wonderful prayer. It is great that you are making yourself available to them. You may find that someone will need to talk and pray with you. Kim, so far bssm students are incredibly nice which motivates me to want to pray with them more. I didn’t plan to run into any students on the sundial bridge and thought I would have to wait until September 8 when their next classes begin. But I ran into three of them. And I ran into them after asking many people if they are bssm students along the way. Bssm students are known to hang out on the sundial bridge to say prayers with people and perform healings. Unless bssm teachers tell students to stay away from me I plan on praying the protection prayer with them come September 8.. my goal is to pray that prayer with each and every one of them. Its about the only thing that can be done in this matter as only God can do something about this. Bethel is rich and powerful. Im going to need help with this. If anybody in redding is sick of watching bethel take advantage of otherwise sincere christians perhaps you can go to the sundial bridge and pray a prayer of protection upon them, too. As a matter of fact I do encourage our local bible based churches to do this too. After all, love and prayer is better than protest signs that will be ignored and bssm students do seem willing to pray with people. Lets give them prayers as thats what they need. I think this is the right way to handle this and we get to watch Gods glory at work, thereafter. Blessings.

You have made yourself available to do the Lord’s work and we do not always get to see the fruit of our labor. You may plant and someone will come and water and the next tend.
We all need to continue and pray for those who are being misled and taken off of the narrow path.
I would not be surprised if you are used in a different way, in God’s timing. A chance meeting with a student at a coffee shop or something similar.
I can tell my by my stats that many are reading this and so the information is getting out there.
When you said that Bethel is rich and powerful I thought of the church of Laodicea in Rev 3.

I just got off the phone with kristy of bethel. About grave sucking she says that bssm doesn’t teach that, nobody is taught to touch tombstones or lying on graves and that they go to graves of dead evangelists as a symbol of their respect for them. Eventhough I pointed out that an information desk clerk at bethel had said that he chases orbs with a camera, niether bethel or bssm are involved in that. I asked her why they don’t have discerners of spirits present during prophecies. She said that they do have them but their are no offices for them. Basically, you can’t see them in the crowd but they are present. They do speak in tongues and I told her to read the bible about that again and to be careful. And I asked her what she thought about the pope and charismatic movement forming a unification with each other that recently went down. She had no comment about it as she doesn’t know anything about it. These are the questions I asked and that she answered. If there is anyone thats an ex-bethel church goer or especially an ex-bssm student that can give feedback about the above please give it . I very much would be interested in further information about this and what opinions and experiences you may have .

I think it is evident students go to the graves to gain what they think is some kind of an anointing.
I always get frustrated when leadership does not correct the problems. I will never forget when a Bible teacher affliated with YWAM did not respond to facebook comments when the kids said they were reading Peck’s (a new ager) The Road Less Traveled” and John Crowder’s mystical book of heresy. The silence made me angry.
This place is too far gone.
