Heaven
The Most Important Thing
Most people, whether Christians or not, have some ideas about a future life that could be called heaven. Many of those ideas are misguided or plain wrong and, sadly, even reasonably well taught Christians may have wrong ideas of what heaven is all about.
In a recent Time magazine article, the author said that many Christians are beginning to understand that heaven really is about making this earth a better place. I think he is right – that is what many people believe. But they are wrong. We cannot make this earth into heaven. Unfortunately, that is the agenda of much of the church today. They believe that the purpose of the church is to create heaven on earth and they work very hard to change the various structures of this world.
This world is simply too corrupt, sinful and contaminated to ever become heaven. People who are trying to save the planet and change governments to create God’s Kingdom on this earth are wasting their time. Yes, one day Heaven will be back on this earth, but in order for that to happen, God will completely destroy the present heavens (sky) and earth (Revelation 21:1, 2Peter 3:10-13). In fact, the process by which He will do that can be described as “uncreating” – He will reverse the whole process of creation and the present creation will cease to exist. He will then create a “New heavens and a new earth” and then the New Jerusalem will descend out of heaven and be located back on the New Earth (Revelation 21:3, 10).
So what will heaven be like? Modern Gospel songs do not sing about heaven because their writers are looking for heaven in this creation. But if I have to believe the old Gospel songs, then heaven will be about streets of gold, a mansion over the hilltop, crowns and an eternity of comfort. That is actually how most Christians see heaven and of course those ideas are actually based on the Scriptures.
But there is one problem. All these ideas about heaven miss the most important part of heaven – The Lord Jesus Christ!
We have missed the point regarding the purpose of the church. We believe church is about worship, preaching, fellowship, evangelization, meetings and so on. Most churches have forgotten that all those things we do every week is secondary and that it should really all be about Jesus Christ. Paul put it this way: “And He is the head of the body, the church… that in all things He may have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18). Thus church has become a whole bunch of activities and Jesus finds Himself outside His own church (Revelation 3:20).
In the same way we have created a Heaven in which Jesus is simply a curiosity. Just like when you go to Paris, you have to see the Eiffel Tower and when we go to heaven, we will get to see Jesus. But we are really more interested in the big mansion and wonder if we will have air conditioning, a big screen TV in the living room and a barbeque in the back yard. We wonder if our crown will be bigger than our neighbor’s and if my mansion will be the grandest on the block.
Because of our materialistic worldview we have turned heaven into a place of things, houses and streets. Because of our sinful pride we have re-created heaven into a place where I will be the big deal, with the big crown and mansion and where I will eventually be vindicated.
Heaven is not about you or me, or even about Paul or Peter – it is about Jesus. He is the center, the focus and the purpose. We will spend eternity simply being in His presence and worshipping and serving Him. And here’s the problem. For the majority of Christians that is not very exciting. If God told us that heaven would be a squatter camp but Jesus would be there, would you still want to go? If Jesus is what your life is about you would agree with the hymn writer:
Oh, hallelujah, yes, ’tis Heav’n,
’Tis Heav’n to know my sins forgiv’n;
On land or sea, what matters where?—
Where Jesus is, ’tis Heaven there.
The same Christians who say they long for heaven complain when the service goes five minutes too long or the pews are too hard. Friend, if you find an extra five minutes in the Lord’s presence a challenge or if you cannot sit through a one hour service without checking your cell phone, I have news for you. Heaven will be a long hell for you!
Do you find that shocking? Well, it is supposed to be because it’s the truth. If you cannot wait to get out of the prayer meeting, or don’t even bother to go to the prayer meeting, or wonder why the hymn could not have a few less verses, I seriously doubt that you will enjoy heaven. If you find reading the Bible or attending the Bible study boring, you will be very uncomfortable in heaven.
If Jesus is not the real center of your life – I mean that everything you do and think, revolves around Him, then heaven really has nothing to offer you. Heaven is not about streets, mansions and crowns. It is about simply being in the presence of Jesus for ever and ever. If you find that idea scary, I am concerned that you will be disappointed with heaven. Actually, you won’t even see heaven because heaven is only for those who love Him with all their hearts and whose lives revolve totally around Him.
Be honest now: Are you looking forward to heaven because you are tired of this life or because of the secondary attractions of heaven, or is it simply that you want more of Him? If your answer is anything except you want to see Him face to face and be in his presence forever, then you need to check your birth certificate.
If, on the other hand, you enjoy this life so much that you hope Jesus will not come too soon, you also have a serious problem. You are probably not fit for heaven either.
Paul said: “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain… having a desire to depart and be with Christ… is far better.” (Philippians 1:21, 23). His highest goal was simply to “be with Christ.” That is heaven!

This is a great post. I totally agree, we really need to get Jesus in our idea of heaven more often. He kind of lives there hahaha.

Believers will NOT spend eternity in heaven, will they? I thought that Jesus promised that the meek will inherit the EARTH 🙂

The book of Revelation in chapter 21 gives a description of the “new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away.” The elements of this earth will be melted with fervent heat. Everything we know about this current earth will be instantly burned up in the “Day of the Lord.” 2 Peter 3:11-12

Hmmm, if I’m not wrong, Jesus despised people who were judgemental, so all you people who go around saying that anyone who disagrees with what YOU believe is “wrong”…..well, that’s incredibly judgemental. Just because YOU believe that heaven is going to be one long bible study spent at the feet of Jesus….doesn’t mean that you’ve got it right. But, you wont even consider that you’ve got it wrong, will you? Of course you wont….you’re far too judgemental and closed minded for that. Go figure!

Actually the verse I think you are referring to, is the do not judge verse. If you read the verse in context, it says that we are to not judge as hypocrites. It is Matthew 7:1-6. Jesus does not say anything about despising anyone but warns of hypocrisy. The rest of chapter 7 goes on to say what judgments we should make.
Here are some verses that help us know a little about heaven. (from gotquestions.org
The city is filled with the brilliance of costly stones and crystal clear jasper. Heaven has twelve gates (Revelation 21:12) and twelve foundations (Revelation 21:14). The paradise of the Garden of Eden is restored: the river of the water of life flows freely and the tree of life is available once again, yielding fruit monthly with leaves that “heal the nations” (Revelation
22:1-2).
However eloquent John was in his description of heaven, the reality of heaven is beyond the ability of finite man to describe (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Heaven is a place of “no mores.” There will be no more tears, no more pain, and no more sorrow (Revelation 21:4). There will be no more separation, because death will be conquered (Revelation 20:6).
The best thing about heaven is the presence of our Lord and Savior (1 John 3:2).
We will be face to face with the Lamb of God who loved us and sacrificed Himself so that we can enjoy His presence in heaven for eternity.

That’s all great and sounds lovely. To believe in this though, you must also believe that anyone who does not believe it is going to spend eternity burning in fire!?!? I used to be a christian, was “born again” in 2004, baptized and everything. That time in my life was filled with more angst, fear, despair and confusion than any other. I am very thankful that I woke up and saw all the hypocrisy. The God I know and love does not deal in fear, only love. He threatens and/or punishes nobody wth anything, let alone this most despicable and horrible of fates. Burning forever in a fire, seriously??? What loving father does this? If there is a God who does this, then I certainly don’t want anything to do with him.
Since I got out of christianity I have really grown spititually, and realize that the God I know is with us constantly and that we are ALL directly connected to him, we do not have to go through Jesus, or anyone else, to get to him. We certainly do not have to fear a horrendous fate like “hell” and live our lives in a box, trying to please him….we don’t have to fear anything. If you believe the bible is the word of God, then you have to believe all of it, and some of the stuff in that book is beyond bad….it’s the stuff of nightmares. Any other book that had the same content as the bible, would never be left on coffee tables, in hotel rooms etc….children would never be permitted to read it. I’m referring, of course, to the old testament. It’s just frightening. Please don’t tell me that all of that was put away or forgotten when Jesus came….that old chestnut doesn’t work at all. Unless there were 2 Gods of course…the old testament God and the new testament God?
Sorry for writing so much, it wasn’t my intention, but thanks for taking the time to read it.

Hi Maddison…
No problem with how much you have written.
I grew up in the church and saw so much hypocrisy…I left but I was the one who was a hypocrite because I was basing my walk with God with what I was seeing in others.
If you came to the Lord then you may have been in a spiritual battle. Satan didn’t bother me when I was sitting on a barstool. But when I returned and repented, I had to lean on the Lord totally.
I believe in the Bible..all of it. The God in the Bible is a God of love and compassion, but there are many aspects to Him. He is Holy, Just, He is coming back….in judgement. If we are not right with Him, then we cannot stand before a Holy judge, We will be condemned and rightly so. That is why Jesus paid the price.
The OT has a lot of bloodshed, but God said that he would destroy those who turned away from HIm. Over and over again He said those who follow the Gods of the others nations would be destroyed. The pagans worshiped idols and false gods. They even sacrified their children to the false gods. Indeed they were destroyed.
“Burning forever in a fire, seriously??? What loving father does this? If there is a God who does this, then I certainly don’t want anything to do with him.”
God gives us choices….He doesn’t want anyone to perish. We are the ones that turn away from the Father. But if we return the like Prodigal Son He will welcome us back. It is always our choice. LIke you said…you “don’t want anything to do with him.”
“the God I know is with us constantly and that we are ALL directly connected to him, we do not have to go through Jesus, or anyone else, to get to him”
Acts 4:12 says “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
NO other way…..
Contrary to many teachings in the church, the life of a Christian is not easy. It says we will be hated for His namesake. We are supposed to die to our own life and live for Christ. The road is narrow.
Seems hard…but when you allow Jesus Christ to really be Lord of your life….He enables, He gives joy and peace even in times of trouble.
I pray blessings for you….and that God will turn you around back to Him.

Hi Kim,
I really appreciate the time you are taking to respond, thank you! I think we’re just respectfully going to have to agree to disagree on this. It’s incredibly nice of you to pray that God turns me around back to him….but I’m already with him, he’s with me always, so there’s no need for any turning around. I don’t believe in satan, or hell or judgement….when I did, I lived in a lot of unhappiness and confusion, so much so that my husband I almost split up. My heart tells me there is no need to fear, and ever since I made the decision to follow my heart (which I believe is God speaking to me) I have not felt any of the fear, angst etc I did previously. I’ve been through some very trying times just recently, and although it’s hard not to worry – it’s a human thing! – I always trust that God will make everything ok, and He hasn’t let me down yet! He’s a great one for coming in at the very last minute isn’t he?!?! Sheesh, wish his timing was more like mine..lol!!
I just cannot accept, cannot get my head around, ANY father….let alone a Holy one, judging and condemning any of his children. It just doesn’t resonate with me at all, and therefore I don’t accept it. This is one of the struggles I had while I was a christian. I know what the bible says about Jesus being the only way to God, and this is one of the many reasons I couldn’t stay a christian. There were way too many conflicts for me, and no answers that satisfied me. The day I realized that to remain a christian I’d have to blindly accept, trust and believe everything in the bible, no matter how many questions went unanswered, was the day I knew it wasn’t the right way for me. I felt like the proverbial square peg trying to fit into the round hole!
I do absolutely believe that Jesus lived, and that he was one of the greatest spiritual teachers this earth has ever known. I’m looking forward to meeting him very much!! 🙂 If indeed he died in order to save all of us, then it is done…surely? Why would there be any more judgement or suffering if he did it all for us already? His death was indescribably cruel and barbaric, my feeling is that enough was achieved.
I totally respect your beliefs Kim…I have a couple of very close friends who are true christians and they are the nicest, most gentle people I know, although perhaps slightly misguided…LOL, just kidding!! We have a giggle…they say they are praying for my soul, and I smile and say “thank you, but there’s no need, my soul is just fine and dandy!!” When I left the church it took us a long time to get to the point where we could talk about our differences of opinion, and our different beliefs, without the discussion getting either heated, emotional, or both. It would infuriate me to know that they truly believed I was going to burn in a fire forever because I no longer believed as they did. This is judgemental, whichever way you look at it, but they couldn’t (wouldn’t?) see it. They still believe that I’m “lost”, I know it, but I’ve grown enough spiritually to realize that nobody knows for sure that their belief is the “right” one, so I can accept this is what they believe, love them and not be affected by it. Faith is simply a belief in something that you feel strongly about, and the more information you have/learn about it, the more things you find that support that belief, the more solid that belief becomes. I believe with all my heart that we are all spiritual beings, and our life here in the “earth classroom” is all about lessons and growing spiritually.
I also believe that you and I ‘meeting’ like this, and our conversation has a purpose too. My wish is that our communications make you smile, or laugh, and not anger or frustrate you.
Hugs,
Maddison

Maddison…
It has been a nice chat…but you are going to have to come to terms with your statement…..
“I do absolutely believe that Jesus lived, and that he was one of the greatest spiritual teachers this earth has ever known. I’m looking forward to meeting him very much!!”
You think Jesus was the greatest spiritual teacher this earth has ever known? Well, Jesus claimed to be God…So this has to be true or false. If he is God then you need to believe and put your trust in Him and obey all He says in scripture. If He is not God, then Jesus is a liar. A great spiritual teacher cannot be a liar. There are no other choices. : )
You cannot make up your own Jesus….
Maybe we will chat again someday…

When one is born again, certain things usually happen
Repentance or a turning in a new direction, conversion (Matthew 18:3; John 3:3) Love for God’s Word (John 8:47) Love of righteousness (1 John 2:3-4) God’s chastening (Hebrews 12:6-8) Looking for Christ’s return (Hebrews 9:28)
When I was born again….a love for the Bible happened…I was so thirsty for it. I began to hate my sin…in fact I asked that God expose it to me. That was a hard corner to turn…: )..ouch…He began to remove certain things in my life….and I began to look forward to His coming again…When God asked me to serve Him, He began to teach and enable me to do HIs will instead of my own….He is the Lord of my Life, my Joy, and Peace. I gladly serve Him…
